What to Wear to a Homecoming Dance

The homecoming is one of the biggest and the most important events of the school year. It is an amazing opportunity to dress up, have fun, meet new people, discover new horizons, or maybe impress that special someone. Many start planning their outfits weeks, even months in advance, to have it all set for that special night. If you're one of those girls who wait until the last minute, don't worry, we're here to help! This little guide will help you find the best homecoming dress that will match your body, style, and personality perfectly.

Don't Forget About the Dress Code

Homecoming dresses are usually semi-formal. In the majority of cases, the school will provide a dress code or theme for the homecoming dance, so try to stick to it when searching for a dress. For example, if the homecoming dance theme is 'Through the Decades'', choose homecoming dresses with the 70s, 80s, and 90s influences. Think bright colors, cool prints, oversized shoulders, and puff sleeves. Or if the theme is country-inspired opt for dresses with floral prints, soft colors, and flirty ruffles. Keep in mind, this isn't prom. So you don't have to be too extra yet.

Dress According To Your Body Type

Let's face it, not everybody looks good in the same dress, right? When shopping for a homecoming dress it is important to know your body type. Are you an apple or a pear? An hourglass or an inverted triangle? We know, it all kinda sounds weird, but when you finally figure out which body shape you are, finding the most flattering fit becomes a reality right away. You'll look amazing and feel confident. For example, if you are having an apple body shape, the aim is to slim the chest area and enhance the hips and legs. With that in mind, opt for short-a-line homecoming dresses. If you have an hourglass body shape, tight knee length dresses are a way to go. A-line or wrap dresses are the perfect choice for the pear body shape.

Consider the Weather

Homecoming dance usually occurs in early fall, with the inevitable temperatures, so you might want to take the weather into consideration. Especially if you live somewhere where it will be cold. If that is the case, we recommend a cute jacket or a blazer. Also think about the sleeve length! And don't forget the tights!

Keep in mind, this isn’t Prom

The homecoming dance is usually semi-formal, so stay away from floor-length gowns. These dresses are only allowed if the dress code is formal, or Homecoming dance theme, or Old Hollywood glam.

Pay Attention to the Fabric

When picking a hoco dress, pay attention to the material of the dress. Avoid see-through materials, which are inappropriate for this kind of event. And stay away from thick materials! Instead go for fabrics such as lace, tulle, satin, and stretch crepe.

Match your Dress to Your Date

Are you going to a Homecoming dance with a date? If your answer is yes, you should totally match the colors of your outfits. For example, if you are wearing a beautiful green dress, ask your date to consider wearing a green tie in the same shade.

Opt for a dress in a shade of fuchsia, or Barbie pink. Or play with materials, and choose a dress with gold or emerald green sequins. The bows and high low dresses are also a huge trend right now. And if you want to challenge your inner '90s queen' opt for a slip dress or slip dress with a corset. We are sure your Instagram comments will say; ''QUEEN!''
